About
Hi! I'm Kathryn Paul. I’m a self-taught watercolor artist living in Longmont, Colorado. I have no formal training outside of a few continuing education courses in drawing and painting. Several years ago, a friend introduced me to watercolor and I fell in love. The funny thing about that was I had absolutely no desire to paint in watercolor. But I found it to be magical! And I was hooked. Watercolor has a bit of a steep learning curve, so it was just a matter of spending lots of time painting. I still consider myself a student, always practicing.
The subjects I choose are landscapes because I am in awe of the beauty of the natural world. Being in nature is a spiritual experience for me. I believe there is healing in nature. It's where we find rest for our spirit, and rejuvenation to go back to the world. I want my paintings to be a peaceful refuge and a reminder of how nature heals the soul.
I use a realistic/impressionistic style because I like the way I can play with color and the way shapes are representational without being exact. The viewer can use their imagination to fill in any information which leads to a more personal connection.
I choose to use watercolor because of the way it plays and flows on the paper and moves together to form incredible colors and textures. It is almost ethereal and is like painting with light itself. I want my paintings to elicit feelings of joy and tranquility using the beauty of nature. It's a way to slow down and to appreciate the gift of life.
